April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, an annual time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention of oral cancer. As your South San Francisco dentist, it’s our responsibility to educate our patients and communities about the risks of oral cancer and in doing so, we hope you will take some time to understand the critical role that routine screenings play in saving lives.
Understanding Oral Cancer
Oral cancer refers to cancers that develop in the mouth, throat, lips, tongue, or cheeks. In 2024 alone, approximately 58,500 people in the U.S. were newly diagnosed with oral cancer, according to the Oral Cancer Foundation. And oral cancer is on the rise. The American Cancer Society most recently estimated that 59,660 new cases and 12,770 deaths in the U.S. from oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer in 2025.
The American Dental Hygienists Association cites that the five-year survival rate is only about 40% because oral cancers are often discovered at later stages. Survivors often experience problems such as facial disfigurement or eating and speaking difficulties. Thus, early detection is key to improved survival rates and routine screenings significantly increase the chances of successful treatment and survival.
Risk Factors to Know
While oral cancer can affect anyone, certain factors can increase the risk, including:
Tobacco use (including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and smokeless tobacco)
Excessive alcohol consumption
Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
Prolonged sun exposure (increasing the risk of lip cancer)
Poor oral hygiene and nutrition
Family history of cancer
The Importance of Regular Screenings
One of the most effective ways to detect oral cancer early is through routine screenings during dental visits. During an oral cancer screening, your dentist will examine your mouth, throat, and neck for any abnormalities such as lumps, sores, or discolorations.
Early signs of oral cancer may include:
Persistent mouth sores that don’t heal
Red or white patches in the mouth
Difficulty swallowing or chewing
Chronic sore throat or hoarseness
Swelling in the jaw or neck
